ITHACA, NY - Some of the area’s most talented young vocalists have organized a cabaret on Saturday, March 19th, at 3pm, to raise scholarship money for aspiring young singers. The event, at the Unitarian Church in Ithaca, will feature popular musical theater numbers and desserts donated from local businesses.
The cabaret’s theme is “A Musical Theatre Geek’s Guide to History,” a journey through time told through the Broadway musical. Songs like “Glamorous Life” from Little Night Music and “All the Wasted Time” from Parade bring history alive, while pieces like “When You’re Home” from In The Heights highlight the world today.
“It’s so important for singers our age to get one-on-one training,” says Imri Leshed, one of the teen organizers. “The goal of this event is to give singers who can’t afford that a chance to grow like we have”
The singers all belong to the Body Song Voice Studio, run by Sharon Costianes, and while they credit Costianes with their success, she says the cabaret was conceived and completely produced by the students themselves.
“What they’ve accomplished is impressive and I’m proud of their efforts to make vocal training available to others in the community,” she says.
The participating teens have extensive resumes, including starring roles in school plays, Running to Places productions, and even professional theater. Many of them also sing with the Ithaca Children’s Youth Choir and Vitamin L, as well as in their school choirs. In addition, many of the Body Song Studio’s alums have gone on to top musical theatre programs.
The cabaret is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted. For more information, contact Sharon Costianes: firstname.lastname@example.org or (607) 227-7590.
